I was feeling the same way in the begining of the game but now I am at level 9, I have the bloodlust sword and he is getting pretty deadly. The lightning strikes and criticals are becoming more frequent. Hang on a few more levels and I think you will be glad you did.

What affects the chance of lightning strikes?

It comes out very rarely for my felpurr samurai. Currently he's lvl 18 using Fang and an enchanted wakizashi. For skills he has 80+ swords, dual, close; for stats, max Dex, Spd, and the rest split in Str and Sense.

Also, what affects the number of hits in a lightning strike? I remember early on he'd get 4x strikes, but then 6x strikes would start appearing.

Do not forget wakizashi for samurai (suitable for ninja, too). There is a 1% instant kill probability after all. On my experience it occurs more frequently, though.
In addition i often wonder why his first hit (en.katana or demonblade) brings often more less damage as the off-hand with wakizashi (say 6 with demonblade and 23 with wakizashi at level 9 just now). I even begin to suspect there is hidden bonuses for class-specific weaponry.

P.S. Ops! That 1% wasn't from wakizashi

I have read a lot about samurai vs. fighter and tested both, and I must say - fighter all the way! With berserk he outclasses any hybrids, and i choose high guaranteed damage over a low chance of lightning strike (no good all the same, less damage) or critical hit. My dream team would now be: 2 fighters with swords, 2 fighters with polearms and 2 bishops. Of course, bards and gadgeteers are a lot of fun, too

Indeed... Fighters fight better... but when my Samurai Freeze fleshes all the enemies, he's got free reign to beat the bloody hell out of them. It's all about the trade off. My samurai can't wear much armor, but hey that's cool, because he can teleport for me =) it's all personal preferance. My current team is Sam, Nin, Mon, multiclassed gadgeteer with 14 levels of bard, Bishop and Alch. These days i'm seeing about 1 Critical a fight. it's a beautiful thing. Oh... and as for the Wakizashi seeming to do more dmg, if you look at the initiative for the weapoins, you'll probably see that the Waki is going first, then you're heavier weapon.
