I remember reading that NPCs tended to be experience sinks and I've found that to be more of a blessing than a curse. Since monsters scale to your party members' levels, I would rather get less experience for my fighting than more experience so that my party members actually level up slower. That way, they're given more time to practice their skills.
I have re-started again--6th game now--because losing that 5 int points bugged me to no end. My last group had 4 magic users, so by the time I got there... one already had int maxed and one was almost maxed. But when I was playing that mix, any NPC was good for my group because of my group's inherent lack of tanks in the front line. When Myles left, my group happily took in Sparky. My group didn't take Saxx because I didn't realize he was a recruitable NPC. He was not friendly and my group had to talk friendly to him so that he wouldn't be neutral (maybe because I initially talked to him before enlisting). I believe it's built into the game that your group has to try out different strategies in the game. My sixth group isn't doing so hot so far. They consist of a Lord, Samarai, Ninja, Ranger, Gadgeteer, and Bishop. They're currently at lvl 7 and in Arnika leveling up slowly. I hadn't distributed enough points into pickpocket so my ninja's not too good at pickpocketing. (I didn't want to invest my time into Myles for pickpocketing if one of my originals had the skill, too). |
