You could go cowled wizard hunting to get some exp. Cast a spell in Athkatla and get the warning. Cast another one and the fight begins. You can get some extra exp. this way. And do it a couple of times. There are 5 or 6 groups of them, maybe more.
You can't go back to the assylum after you have rescued Imoen and got out of the place, unless you cheat that is.

there are zone warping cheats that allow you to go to any zone in the game. the assylum dungeon is one of them.
