Jan stayed alive for me,most of the time everyone was attacking Minsc,Jan was almsot untoched by every attack, if they did it was some ambush by thief, and all you have to do is let jan cast MM and thenmy archer would pick of the theif attacking him,np,,hesa good theif,and good mage.Not useless at all

With all due respect, Aerie SHOULDN'T BE fighting. Let her stand behind the front line casting curative cleric magic, offensive mage spells, leveraging all the wands, and occassionally swinging her sling when bored. There is also the Belt of Constitution that increases her constitution to 18 for most of the day, usable once per day, that gives her about 40% more HP. She's one of the most useful members of my party. But that's just me using her well

Cernd for sure, and maybe that gay little theifling dude Haer Dalis or whatever his name is.

Nalia or Cernd, Jan was one of my best NPC's he never died and he hurt my enemies so badly with his spells and crossbow that Minsc and any other fighter I had could easily kill them.

Aerie CAN be good in close combat if you give her the Robe of the Good Archmagi, Shield Of Reflection, Ring of Earth Control, Mace Of Disruption, and Bracers of AC 3(Or 4, maybe even 5), kinda expensive, and a bit overkill just for one NPC, but if she has it, then she is TRULY powerful.

Valygar is also pretty strong, he slashes foes to shreads easily enough for me and he never dies on me, maybe you picked him up in Chap 6 where he will be weak and everyone else in your party strong and the enemies too strong for him?

As for Haer'Dalis, the one time I tried having him in my party he wasn't too weak, however there are so many NPC's that are better.

Nah, too expensive - she's still got that crusty leather armour when I found her (later removed due to inadaquate space). Then I bought (using MY own money) a girdle of hill giant strength from the adventurer's mart and made her hold a sackful of full plates - ready for selling.

.........basically, she is a dump pit for things I don't want.

- never holds anything valuable (don't trust her)
- always hold stupid keys

(and.......for my sake she can hold the daystar!)

Heardalis despite the fact he is the best race Teifling, is naff, being a bard he has weak fighting skills and weak magic skills.
If he was a skald or jester he would be worth it for the song alone but blades are royally rubbish.

Yeah, its a shame about Haer'Dalis being a blade-whats the point of having a bard whose bard songs dont gain in potency as he goes up levels??

BTW, why is Nalia so crap?? I am starting up again and would like to play with her-I always reckoned she would be a good mage, especially as you find her pretty early.
Heh, Aerie is pretty weak but I always had her at the back casting support/offensive magic.Minsc didnt like the idea of her being in the frontline!

I'd like to say Anomen, just because I hate him, but I have to admit he made a reasonable contribution for the short time I kept him. Too bad he's a slimey weasel. My vote would have to go to Cernd, pretty much for the reasons Accord already mentioned.
