That Beholder looks great, I do believe that the back bround needs to be transparent. I would like to suggest with the combat monster icon you had a small picture of the monster with appropriate background so that a party sees what they are up against during combat.

yup, Usually use a background like that so that the monster is easy to see, and it is easy to change

I've been doing some work with this- if the initial background has a high contrast with the figure, and you use a fill with a tolerance of 10-20 to fill in the background once it has been shrunk, it goes a long way towards a crisp outline. You inevitably have to go in and do some pixel by pixel replacement.
