Again thank you everyone for your responses and warm welcome.
Bungleau I have read a few of the Myth books. I liked the earlier ones but when they went into the M.Y.T.H. part I stopped reading them. The Steve Perry book I might check out someday but just to clearify it deals with Martial Arts not Magic at all correct? Which sounds cool and I will proably read it at sometime but right now I am looking for a Mage story that kinda uses the Martial Arts trope. Mac_Attack I have read the First six Dragonlance books. They were some of my favorite D&D stories when I was a teanager. I think the first three books, believe it or not, to be one of the best fantasy trilogies, but that is also looking at it through my young teenage years, I should reread it sometime and see what I think of it now. To put some perspective I am now a 38yr old man with three kids, so I might look at things a bit differently now. Still I loved those books. The second Trilogy was interesting but in my opinon the first three were better. I did reread Ringworld recently and it did not hold up as well as I remember it from my youth. But it is still a very good book. How is "Otherland" and what does it deal with exactly? I have never read Tad Williams but have thought about picking him up sometime. Specially his Memory, Sorror, and Thorn books. toot033 I have a Dresden book lying aroud the house somewhere. I'll check it out at some point. Can you tell me more about the Wizard of 4th Street? Harkoliar thanks for your recommendation but dose the 7 Suns series have anything to do with what I stated I am looking for? "I want to read a book that deals with wizards/sorcerers, some form of magic where it is about the person learning the craft."? If not that's fine and it still might be something I am interested in the future, I do love Science Fiction. What about this series do you like and why did you recommend it to me? Knightscape thanks for your answer, it does sound interesting form what I read at Amazon. What do you like about the story? I am currently waiting on The Black Magician Trilogy and Web Magic(which I hope will be in my mail today). I am reading, believe it or not, Magic:the Gathering's The Gathering Dark:Ice Age Cycle Book 1 by Jeff Grubb. To fill the time till my new books get here. It is a pretty good read. Very light reading but is actually filling the need I have right now about a person learning his magic and he uses a memory palace(it's why I picked it up in the first place)to store his spells. I'm a little over half way done and should finish today. Not sure if I will bother with the next two in the trilogy though. Depends on how he ends it and if it still has my interest. I do plan on picking up Coldfire Trilogy now after reading more about it. Seems like a perfect fit. Feel free to keep the recommendations coming but I think I definitely have enough to start and enough that it should scratch the itch that I have for this type of book right now. Thanks. |

The otherland deals with a combination sci-fi and Medival/D&D.
Starts out with a group of kids that are pluged into the internet and play games Via virtual reality. But things start to happen to the kids. Because of the internet. Very long books. With many visits to virtual reality worlds. Very cool books.

Otherland were solid books but I think Tad Williams REALLY took off with the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series... TOP shelf fantasy. I'm now about halfway through the second book in his second fantasy Series, Shadowmarch.

7 suns series is similar to the Dune Series in terms of Science Fiction meaning space, space battles, politics and schemes. Its a really good series I would recommend. In terms of Magic and swords however, I am running short of suggestions because you read what I have read mostly

I don't want to get into to many details of what I found interesting because of potential spoilers. In general terms its an interesting take on a high fantasy world. Even though the genre has been done a lot, I still found it to be a good story, although the fact that this is a first time novelist does show up from time to time.

For something with a different ring, the seventh swordsman trillogy, I think it is by Drake. It's about a man from another world being transplanted and having to learn about a new world with magic and swordplay. It may be difficult to find but well worth it. Also the first 50 pages are important but a little boring. After that it really takes off.
David Webber did a fantasy series that was pretty good also I think the first book is called "the War Gods Own" The Moonshae Trillogy was a good set also I think Troy Denning wrote it.
