I just tested this with a dwarven thief. Maxxed out my OL, and I couldn't open the lock on the first try, but it did open for me on the second try.

Cheers!

BTW, Elvenhair reappears when you get to Beregost!

As a rule, try to open the lock 3 times. If it doesn't open, then you probably need more skill.

Yep. I think the same applies to smashing the lock. If you fail 3 times, you'll *never* open it with your current skill/strength

I remeber on my first game, I tried picklocking and bashing a few locks (not the one in Candlekeep)... didnt work initially, only worked after 50 or so attempts... since then I try two or three times, if it fails I come back with better skills.

That's just not true. I'll try 10 times, as a rule, and sometimes don't get it until that 10th time.

Since it's a game of percentages, maybe you could eventually open any lock with any skill amount. I dunno.

[/QUOTE]I doubt that the chance of opening a lock is a geometric distribution - it is probably binomial, meaning that the probability of opening the lock is the same with each time you attempt to open it. So as you try more and more, there are more opportunities to get that small probability of opening the locked chest. ZFR, that is why you got it around the 50th try.
