I literally just got back from seeing it. I have never read the books, but now I have to, just to find out what the heck happens next.

I liked it, but if I were to compare it to LotR, Tolkien cannnot be beat.

What totally pissed me off was that we saw the girl only shoot one damned arrow at an enemy and when that doomed little guy went down, the whole theater was ROFL. I think the fighting could have been heavier...but then it would have gone into PG-13, US. Maybe they will release an extended ed. with the extra footage.

I think they wanted to play down the christian references.

Yeah, my father went to see it and he made simillar comments to yours. Basically, he said the combats might seem realistic to kids, but for an adult it just seem like kids playing around.

I saw a review that compared the movie to Peter Pan, and I think the guy is probably right. I know Disney wanted it PG because they wanted a familly friendly Harry Potter, but I think they might have tuned it down too much. It doesn't seem as entertaining for adult.

So I've just seen it last night.

Lately I've been reading books on how to write novels and short stories. I think everything they've warned me not to do has been made in that story.

The main characters do nothing. They could be written out of the plot, and the actions they did could be given to some random extra playing the role of a blind kid, and it would make no difference to the events. Actually, it might even enhance things and make them more dramatic.

The main characters didn't face and defeat their ennemy, there was no final confrontation. Someone else wander around to effortlessly and instantly defeat the ennemy for them.

The ending was weak and unbelievable. You're telling me characters that spent the whole movie complaining about how they missed their parents and wanted to see them again, the characters that didn't want to stay and help narnia, just forgot about their parents and their world for 20 years!?!

There were also other things that seemed wrong.

For example, the two boys had no idea how to fight with weapons, they never did before. They are given swords, and suddently they can hold their own and defeat orcs, ogres and wathever else is thrown at them as if they were the best swordsmans in the land. Then there were the girls. They made a big scenes of each of the kids getting gifts. The eldest is given a bow "that will rarely miss", the youngest a knife, so that she can defend herself. The eldest shot the bow once, in a no stress situation after the fighting was over, and the youngest never used her knife. You never make a point of a character receiving an item of you don't build on this. That's a loose plot thread.

I mentioned this part before, but it's just too much, so I have to go at it again. Every problems that happened along the movie were vanquished by something else than the main characters. A fox saved them, a dam saved them, nameless and faceless soldiers freed one. The list goes on. They were not so much prophecysed heroes as spectators.

And then there was the cheezy line. Both armies are face to face, the ennemies start charging. The oldest, the one that's been named king for no reason, turn toward his general, that badass centaur leader that look more powerfull than anything in this movie, the one who's world has been enslaved for 100 years and who's friends and hope are all here right now in this field, and ask him in an authoritarian "did you break the flower pot" kind of voice "Are you with me!".
DUH! What kind of question is that? If for some stupid reason he wasn't, you'd think he wouldn't be standing on the front line, 10 steps in front of his army, while an evil army 3 times the size of his is charging at him. My reaction would probably be to pull that ungratefull little kid on my horse and spank him some good sense, but the centaur king instead look at him seriously, as if he hasn't just been called a coward and traitor, and seriously reply "I would die for you, majesty".

Oh, I usually hate talking about physical appearance, because it's really rude, but have to do it this time. I really don't like how those kids look.

And to conclude, I don't know what he was trying to accomplish with his mirror effect of the wardrobe scene, it was almost the same word for word, but to me, it just made me feel like the whole story was a waste of time, as the characters devolved and shifted back to the exact same bickering they did at the begining of their journey. Hey might as well have said the whole thing was a dream and they learned nothing, it wouldn't have been any different.
