Spot on the same as me in the Sci fi category Oblivion. Though thinking back it has been a few years, maybe ten years, since I last read a sci fi book. Are there any recent sci fi books out there worth a look anyone?

I really liked 'Fight Club' by Chuck Palaniuk.

Fyodor Dostoevsky's 'Crime and Punishment' was great too!

Frank Herbert's 'Dune' series was a winner!

'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens really hit home for me. Great novel!

Oh, and I think Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' is an awesome fantasy work! It really laid the foundations for all of this 'Dungeons and Dragons' nonsense that we all waste our time with on this board

If you can get over the stigma of what amounts to fanfiction, the Doom books by Dafydd Ab Hugh and Brad Linaweaver are quite entertaining.

Is there any way to make the word fanfiction look mouldy and jiggly?

Novels
-George Orwell - Keep the aspidistra flying (Anyone who fancies themself as an poet, writer or artist should read this. It says everything about the western ideal of the 'artist'. Also, very readable.
-Evelyn Waugh - Brideshead revisted (Catholic reactionary tosh, but remarkably witty and occassionaly profound)
-Solzhenitzyn - Cancer ward (the greatest novel ever writen, in any language)

Poets
-Alexander Pushkin
-Sylvia Plath
-John Donne

Non-fiction
-George Orwell - Collected essays
-Encyclopedia of art and artists (published by a company callled Phaidon, I believe)
-Oxford library of words and phrases volume I: Quotations
