I recommend you go to SoS website and read his BG *SPOILER Free* guide to touring the Sword Coast. There *is* a timed event, but it takes place later in the game when you have reached Balder's Gate city. Also.....

Kivan will complain about not finding the bandits,,but he will NOT leave the party unless your reputation drops too low.

Thanks for the nod, ElfBane. As far as time is concerned, there are two main rules:

1) If somebody mentions a specific time frame, they mean it.
2) ALWAYS listen to what your party members have to say, with the potential exceptions of Kivan and Coran (detailed above and on my site).
