Mine was in Bryce Courtenay's April Fool's Day - it is a biography of his son who contracted HIV because he was a haemophiliac. The whole book was tragic but his deterioration into paranoia and his eventual death were so sad. Obviously it was especially poignant because it actually happened.

Mine is in "Where the Red Fern Grows" after the battle between the two hounds and the cougar at the end. One of the dogs was severly injured and was dying.

The ending of Stranger In A Strange Land. It wasn't sad, really, but very powerful IMHO.

I agree w/you here. Also, I was deeply moved the first time I read the books when Gandalf fell into the shadow, and all seemed lost.
