I can't believe no one had mentioned Alan Dean Foster! I'm more of a fantasy instead of a sci/fi reader, but his books are very good reads. Also Jack L. Chalker's Quintara Marathon was pretty good. Mark Sumner's News From the Edge series is also good reading (although more mystery than sci/fi).

Foster's good, I love his humanx stories.

Forgot about Chalker, too. His Well Of Souls stories were excellent. I'm not as impressed with a lot of his newer stuff though. His formula of multi-volume epics pales on you after a while.
