Sheesh, you don't hear me complaining about 90% of the members here not including any literature or even non-fantasy in their favourite books-lists, do you?
Uh, Melusine, I think that you just did, and quite right, too. I wouldn't have the gall to post a list like that, but my "Best List" would only include Tolkein and Robert Heinlein. Shakespeare, Dante, Keats, T.S. Eliot, Proust, Dumas, and Robert Browning would be there, too.

Um, no, I didn't. I don't go around Ironworks posting to all the threads that say "R.A. Salvatore has GOT to be the most brilliant writer ever" even though stuff like that churns my stomach. I DON'T complain about it and strictly speaking have no right to: everybody is allowed to read as much drivel as they want, and there's not a thing I can do about it.

You've good taste though!

Was I to present my opinon that Lord Of The Rings was overrated, neither emotionally moving or perticularly impressive I would likely be flamed to a crisp.

Oh well...

Just kidding, Melusine. But, you are right. I find Salvatore pedestrian, derivative, and emotionally remote, but he does have the knoack of, every once in a while, creating interesting characters. But, for the crime of inventing a character as repulsive and nauseating as Artemis Enteri, and, unforgivably, then not killing him off, I never read him any more. BTW, I see that I left Homer off the list. I re-read the Iliad last year, and found it as fascinating as I did the first time that I read it at age 12.

LOL, I know what you mean.
I've read the first three Drizzt books and enjoyed them (like you enjoy a nice sandwich as compared to a delicious three-course dinner ). I do read such books on occasion, but I wouldn't even put them on the same SCALE as literature...

Coincidentally, I also re-read the Iliad when I was in Greece last summer (seemed fitting somehow ). I must have been about 11 when I did a presentation on Greek mythology in primary school, and with me also, the fascination remains...

Well... LotR's an epic, isn't it? If one of the categories for choosing a 'Best Book of All Time' is instant appeal or accessibility to all, then LotR flunks. You've got to be the kind of person who REALLY digs sprawling HUGE big mad story/sagas to get the most out of LotR.
Besides, there's a big difference between 'taste' and 'style'...
