How does the above equation work with a rougue that has 'use magical device' skills but no caster levels.

If he is a 20th level rougue is it cast as a caster level 20 or something else?

If I was a 35 level cleric with plus 6 penatration would I have a +41 throw
total or 26? (meaning it does not increase after level 20)

Scrolls and wands have the spell at a specific caster level, and that level is used for the DC. I don't think that it cuts off at lvl 20, but on that, I could be mistaken, as spell casters aren't my specialty.

Like rob said, each scroll, wand, or other item that can cast the spell casts the spell at a certain level. That level is used to determine wether it pierces SR and the length/power of its effects.


In general, you aren't going to beat most SR with a wand.


There is no cutoff point to the Caster level being added to the roll to beat SR. A 38th level mage with Epic Spell pen would have a 50% chance of beating 54 SR.

Not talking about wands guys, what you say about them is true. Im talking scrolls in the case of rougues and normal spell casting.

Normal Spell Casting is done through the forumla I've already posted. Of course, the check really doesn't apply if the target has no SR (auto-success)
