I was thinking of adding 'respawn locations' all over each level. And where you die, say on level 1 UM, you would go to heaven or hell (if you're good or bad) and talk to a angel or demon to res, the you pop back to a random location on the level you just died on. You would loose 1000xp, and 2000 gold.
Now, if you decide to run back to yer corpse, or someone res'es ya, you don't get penalized. Something like that.. I don't know how hard this would be to incorporate, but there are LOADS of scripts for respawning on death out on IGN. Maybe I'll check them out. I'll let ya know when I test it--not online, I won't touch the online version.. don't worry. I'll warn you if I ever decide to add it. |

Nothing?
I'm against death penalties myself because the jump between levels is often steep and your character (newbies especially) can find themselves getting hacked to death immediately upon respawn which would be quite serious if penalties existed. But hey, I'm easy [ 01-24-2005, 02:47 PM: Message edited by: shamrock_uk ] |

Tough one! I think there should be SOME penalty whether it's gold or xp or a combo or being respawned someplace else and having to get back, but I think it should be small if you choose to respawn where you died.
Like several people noted, if you already got killed in a place, if you respawn, it's tough enough without possibly losing a level! Maybe a smaller XP loss? Like 200-300 and you respawn where you fell? Larger xp loss and respawing someplace else is good too, I guess. I almost said no to any penalty but then I thought it would be more fair and hehe..it would maybe deter low level players from running solo to the Trollbark forest( or other tough level of UM) right off! With a party it could be rough if you respawn someplace else all the time! Although when I party up, I like to be sure we can resurrect one another most of the time. Either by wand or cleric. I always assumed we WERE losing XP and gold when we did! LOL It can be tough in a bad fight though, especially if your char dies and the others have run off to safety! You end up respawning or sitting there a LONG time! ![]() [ 01-26-2005, 09:01 AM: Message edited by: Cloudbringer ]

I'm kinda against this one, but only because in Undermountain it will be hitting new characters more than the old characters.
Most of the level 30+ characters now where to go to get xp with the least risc, while level 7 characters don't have much of a choice.

It seems that most of the points on this thread have already been made but I thought I would add my own slant.
I start from the point that there are in efu the opions of soloing or travelling in company and that low level characters have a tough time early on.. My own feeling is that if you do travel with a party and they have the skills to resurrect you then there should be no penalties. You have taken the precaution of geting a cleric or someone with a rod of resurrection on your side and that should be in your favour. If you solo that is your choice and you must take your chances. Death is down to your own carelessness and you should take the penalty for your arrogance in taking on efu on your own. The one problem I have is that lower level characters are much more fragile and, even if you know undermountain, are likely to die much more easily in the earlier efu levels than a lvl 30+ PC with armor, weapons and immunities is at levels 10 to 13. It is also quite easy for a newbie to wander into areas off Waterdeep or skullport where they will die in seconds. My own feeling is that any character who dies should get a percentage (10%?)penalty on gold and XP whatever their level if they have to respawn (and why not penalise higher level characters even more - they can afford it). The idea of a random respawn elsewhere on a level sounds good too. I would hate to die on level 8 or 9 and have to work all the way back there with no shortcuts. But thinking of newbies to efu and those trying new characters it may be worth keeping the present free respawn for any character up to, say, lvl 12. This at least gives them a chance to gather some armour and gold - something that is often lacking in other NWN modules. |
