Actually the manual is wrong on that. Bastard Swords are actually Medium Size, hence why they can be used one-handed by medium sized creatures and why they can be used two-handed by smaller creatures. So basically they are the same as Katanas since they both require Exotic Weapon Proficiency and both act as Medium weapons with 1d10 dmg and 19/20 criticals. They do look different though

In the OC, what types of sword are the best between Longswords and Great Swords?
Cheers

Well magical longswords are probably easier to buy from stores, but the magical great swords in the game are just as powerful once you get them. Actually, you can have the blacksmith craft magical weapons for you, so you are basically guarranteed to have a decent magical weapon of any type throughout the OC. I would base the decision of which weapon to use more on your character build than on which weapon type has better enhancements. If your character has alot of strength then the great sword is hard to pass up since you get bonus damage from your strength when using two handed weapons (1.5X normal STR bonus). If you are playing a character with lower strength then a longsword is a nice choice because then you can use a shield for extra defense.
I beat the OC with a dwarf fighter who used a broad axe and tower shield. If I could do it over again I'd probably pick a two handed weapon to make the game play a bit quicker. With that strength damage bonus it would have been much easier to overcome damage resistance when bashing chests

At the mo I'm thinking of 2 different characters to play. Either a Bard/Fighter/RDD or a Fighter/Paladin/CoT. I've not made up my mind which to play yet, but wonder which sword would suit who better?
