If you want to get Coran at such a low level you're probably going to get your ass handed to you by the bandits.

I, too, am a big fan of grabbing Coran as quickly as possible, so I can get him before he puts his Thieving points into skills that I don't need. When I'm doing a speed run, I can zip through the early game at lightning speed (I have entered the Bandit Camp while still a Level 1 Fighter before), recruit Coran, kill a Wyvern or two, and be on my merry way. I have also made at least one speed run where we sprinted to Nashkel, recruited Minsc, did the Mines, ran to the Bandit Camp, cleared it, popped over to the Cloakwood, recuited Coran, killed a Wyvern, took its head to Beregost.....and then went to the Gnoll Stronghold.
Moral(s): Recruiting Minsc and Coran at such early levels can be done. You really have to know what you're doing if you're going to try it, though.

Why is Hide in Shadows useless? My Halfling uses it all the time, all he needs is a good Shadow to hide in, then 75% of the time he stays in Shadow until he attacks.
It also comes in handy when you have two thieves working together. If you have Imoen, just imagine all of the damage Coran and Imoen can do together backstabbing enemies while your PC (Or another NPC) distracts them. Heck, Minsc can tank while Coran and Imoen backstab two enemies! (PC included if they're a Single/Dual/Multi Thief) I do agree that pickpocketing can be useless, unless someone pickpockets from you then you can pickpocket them. I've also made quite a bit of money when I pickpocketed a few rings of protection over and over, but this was in BGII.
