There are Henchman gems, keep those, there are magic Fire Opals, which cast Fireball, you can use Diamonds to create magic items at forges, and there are numerous other quest gems.

LOL. It's because of this character that epic levels had to be created. They said that a monk at 21st level would be basically unbeatable. ) Good choice

I'm going to play the game through again when I'm finished this time with a high persuade, I never thought much of it to start with but started to realise it's potential latter on in the game, however I can kick anyone or anythings ass quite convincingly with my fighter so I guess I'm happy enough ...diplomatic he ain't but by the stones he can hack of a wyrms head and grind into dust

I'm playing fighter. I wanted to create a high in/cha character too so I made a wizard. man game becomes very hard. my familiar helps a lot. the game is really hard as a mage. right?

At the beginning of the game, playing a mage/sorceror is almost suicidal without a henchman or something else. Once you get to high levels though, you get da*n near unstoppable too. I was multi-playing with a Sorceror that was high level (never did find out how high) that had time stop and some other awesome spells. When he cast timestop, I froze in my tracks. Next thing I see, ALL the enemy was lying down burning. Poof. It was clear. He basically did a walkthrough all by himself. I didn't know what spell he cast when he first started, but I do now. He casted Tenser's Transformation. He became an awesome fighter. Higher level mages get VERY powerful. Lower level ones are not that tough though.

) Good choice
Think of it this way. In most armies, only the most elite troops have magical weapons. A monk, at level 20, gets damage reduction 20/+1. Basically this means that a single monk can destroy an entire army, except maybe the noblemen who have access to enchanted weapons. Toss in the monk spell resistance and even the army's mages are useless.

I love the class balances in NWN, but the first time I read the 3rd edition handbook and saw the monk's damage and bonuses, I thought it was probably destined to be the Most Powerful Class In The Game, hands down. So far nobody's managed to convince me I'm wrong.
See, but that's if you are a PC. What happens should you fight another Monk? Their AC bonuses go so high that neither one would hardly ever hit. Even worse if you are a regular PC going against a NPC monk. You will lose everytime. They had to change the system or it would have totally unbalanced the game. That was just one example. They were also talking about Sorcerors too. With unlimited spell progression, they would have access to so many spells, it would have unbalanced the game too. Time Stop Remove Spell Resistance. Tenser's Transformation. Time Stop Whack, Whack, Whack. Ooopss. Dead NPC. LOL. The reverse could also be true too. They were saying that some skill checks would get so unbalanced that they would either automatically fail or automatically pass and negate the whole check in the first place. If anyone hasn't picked up the Epic Handbook, you really should (if it's of interest to you either in playing PnP D&D or seeing how add-ons might go. Lots of interesting reading.
