I finished oncec with Fighter 13/Rogue 7
My current character is in Chapter 2 - he's Rogue 11/Fighter 2

a support class with a few levels goes a long way

the fighter had +4D6 sneak attack when flanking, could disarm traps without stomping on them, pick locks, and had good Persuade skill

I think multi-classing is an outstanding option. For example, a "Ranger/Rogue" is a formidible melee combatant AND has some excellent cross-over skills in the areas of sneaking and traps. I played a Ranger/Rogue through most of Chapter 2. She was a highly effective melee combatant.
The ability to sneak attack is what will make a level or two of rogue attractive to fighter-types, as long as you want your fighter/ranger to be light and quick. Barbarian is also a good fit for ranger/rogues, to get the speed factor and once a day rage ability.

what i don't understand is, why would someone want to multiclass a mage or sorcerer? why bother with this particular class if you're not gonna have access to 9th level spells (or would perhaps be able to cast it once or twice per day)?
a sorcerer that has a selection of three 9th level spells that can be cast six times/day is far more powerfull than a sorcerer with, for instance, one 9th level spell that can only be cast three times/day, no amount of extra hit points and better fighting abilities can make up for that.
or am i wrong in assuming that playing a mage/sorcerer is about magical firepower?

I can think of loads of reasons:
1) Hit points
2) Class Feats
3) you can still get 9th level spells. You get them starting at 17th level anyway (18th for sorceror)
4) that assumes you want 9th level spells when you can probably make do with 1st-8th

just a note no one else pointed out, you can only take 3 classes per character, after that it gets too hard for the engine to keep track of the character.
