The Mantraps are a special initiation. Two weeks from now you will look back at this first encounter differently. Yes, they are way too powerful for this point in the game but somehow we all manage to defeat them and move on. Hope your victory is sweet!!

Elcid: a lot of us play multiple times! I'm on my 4th playthrough (getting close to the end again, finishing up the Shrine); of course, I got the game back in October.

A good rule of thumb is work "right to left" on the map. Generally speaking, the further west something is, the higher the danger level. I usually encounter the Mantraps around 10th-12th level on my characters, which gives my wizard time to learn at least 1 storm spell (Meteorstorm or Firestorm, although Sun magic is more effective against the danged weeds). If I've REALLY been working my Bard (taking him back to the Crypt to fight Rumphy), he sometimes has Icestorm by that time as well (iceburg lettuce, anyone?).

Of course, the first time I played through it, I made the same mistake Hawkwind and many, many others did: started fighting the Rats, was toasted multiple times, and finally reverted the game back to Ishad N'ha and rethought my strategy. The hilarious thing was, since I was journeying at night (dumb dumb dumb) that I never did see the Mantraps, and I thought it was one of the Rats that was a spellcaster that was killing the party...for some time after, my crew would see Ratlings and run screaming into the wilderness...

Live and learn!

Nothing in this game can make me jump like those mantraps! I'm a much higher level now than when I first met them, but my programmed response is still to flee. My characters would have nightmares about the things, well, if they ever slept anyway.

I am still suffering from Post Traumatic Shock. I was just barely beginning to get over it, and then I turned a corner in the Boogre Caves and ... Finally beginning to feel better about the whole thing, I started exploring the Lost Sea ... I felt like spending the rest of the day hiding under my bed.

Huh@ Mantraps are the vegetable panthenon of the Gael serran. Indeed. I remember being whacked by them over a dozen times embarassingly easy for them too. In the end I legged it past the ratlings, ran down the moat east of the castle wall then in that little clearing, when the mantraps couldn't get at me and i had courageously 'baited' them close enough I whacked them with my elven mages (elves rule the school!) with my best spells at that time (Meteor level 4 stone and magma bomb level6 fire) i was a bit harder at 9th level/11th due to the 'Brown Square' episode...brrr.

HOWEVER, after having whacked them out and screamed in glory while vigourously gesticulating various rude gesrures at their fading corpses I forgot to save the gameand walked round to the west side of the Castle where I IMMEDIATELY got whacked by the OTHER two Amazoni traps. Ho-ho i had much fun THAT day...

Si.P.S I think tose mantraps were the ONLY monsters who damaged my party at all til Skull Castle (this game is far too easy early on, not enough threats of death!)

Sazerac, that's exactly what I thought (and did!) I was also travelling in the dark - does anybody else think that not having the ability to sleep/camp etc. is a really DUMB thing to leave out of this game??? I mean, what're you going to do for 8 hours, if you haven't got any dungeons to go through (or want to, at this point)

But, yes - I thought the Mantraps were Wizards or something - or I got nailed by some sort of trap. Never did see the damn things....

Campsites!?!?!? Imagine going to sleep in your tent and getting awaken by a blazing fire cloud casted by one of them big green weeds. You'd be in such a panic that you wouldn't be able to get out of your sleeping bag before you'd be toasted.

Nah, I'm glad you have to stay awake for 1200 hours... It's just like war

Heh heh....

Yes, a good point - but in all the other games I played where you could sleep/camp, you just made damn sure that you were in a safe area before sleeping. I grant you, you *don't* sleep in an area with these blasted things around. I wouldn't mind going out of my way to sleep, regain hit points - and to be able to battle in the daylight... (grin)

Do they see invisible? Are they REALLY casting a spell or are they using some inborn ability that cannot be supressed by Silence? Does Silence work? Does anybody know? This could help to figure out some acceptable tactics.
