For spoiler-free advice (and warnings!) on the ToSC quests, take the link in my sig, go to Chapter 13, and click the link that fast-forwards you to the ToSC section.

argrghrgh was all going so well, durlags tower completed after some nice tactics got me through, loads of exp and excellent equipment, even my wizard walking around with standard ac of 0, everything was looking good, till i walked downstairs in that cultist basement, argrghrghrghrhgrghh i cannot beat the fecker without losing a party member, my current tactic which has got me closest is:

soon as i enter before talking starts back everyone up away, after talking is finished and obviously with everyone having been tanked and warded gainst fear etc monster summoning with everything i got which fills the room with about 40 monsters or so, now most of these keep the demon busy whilst the rest hack up the acolytes, once demon is busy i work round the edges and kill the acolytes with my party whilst trying to zap the demon with my wizard, but for some reason despite the demon being surrounded by lots of animals etc he still finds time to always target at least one party member with death gaze (if not the whole lot when hes being really mean) and then im dead in a few rounds and held to boot.

so what are my options, i dont want to lose a party member, i tried dispel magic and that worked but he just death gazes straight away again, can i reflect the gaze or ward against it in any way?, does the demon have any specific weaknesses, are there any potions or scrolls that may help? (i have a barrel in beregost with basically every scroll or potion in the game in it which i was saving for a tough fight)

i given up on him for the moment to finish off some of the baldurs gate quests before act 6 but i want to take him down and no amount of hitpoints or thac0 helps gainst this guy

Now that the search function is back, look for "Aec'Letec."

If you don't want to run a search, here's a couple of non-spoilery hints:
1) You don't have to take your whole party downstairs at the same time.
2) How does one protect oneself from gaze attacks?
3) Aec has only a small amount of Death Gazes, and they allow a Saving Throw.

yeah i know all that, i tried taking just my tanked up guy down with all sorts of modifiers vs saving throws, he still got done, and so i can protect against this kind of gaze attack then? if so i can win it no problem, but where do i get enough of those potions from or scrolls?

and a small amount? you sure, i counted about 12 so far, its not exactly small thats easily enough charges for one lucky one to slip through.

Hmm....if you sent your Tank down after hopping him up with Potions of Invulnerability and other Save-boosters, he should be completely immune to Death Gaze--of which Aec is supposed to have two, not twelve. At least that's all he ever used against ME, but then my Tank was right up in his face, so maybe Aec would rather melee than use Death Gaze. Was your Tank using mainly archer tactics instead of going toe-to-toe?

For another type of helpful potion, you need look no further than the Ulgoth's Beard Inn.

no my tank was using drizzt +5 sword tactics and -9 ac in his face to beat on him and he definately has more than 2 death gazes cos at one stage he killed my entire party with em, in close combat too, maybe im just unlucky im currently collecting all the antimagic stuff i can find (dispel magic works well on the death gaze) then ill go back and take him on, for the moment im working through chapter 6
