I found that casting Grease to trap almost all the creatures then casting two fireballs toasted most of them...I know bad pun.

I just did this fight the other day.

Before you enter the cave use your cleric to cast bless, chant, armours ect...
When you get in cast entangle asap, then with your mage launch off a fireball or two, all the while pumping arrows into anything that is still moving. By then your tanks should be able to finish off the sword spider and other undead. I also found that a well placed lightning bolt is a perfect way to finish off the spider queen

If you charm one or two of the spiders, everything gets much easier. Fireballs always work too.

Either start with a thief->backstab or a mage with a lightning bolt, trying to avoid it. Retreat and repeat. (Hey that rhymes )

The 'person' in the spiders nest things, isn't a guy. She's a lady named shelob, and if you talk to her a little bit, you'll find that she was in love with a later-to-be-considered-infamous arch-mage Jon Irenicus, who turned her into the shape which she is currently in.

Wow! I figured it was one of those areas were it says "You must gather your party before venturing forth You must gather your party before venturing forth"

Did you have a solo mage?

I don't know how ryaldin pulled "Shelob" as being in the BG series, because the woman's name is actually Centeol.

Ask her about how she came to live in this dreary abode, and she replies, "I am cursssed. The archmage, Jon Icarus*, made me this way for indignities done to him and his wife by me. I loved Jon, but now I hate him. Now DIE!!!"

*Jon Irarus was the "working title" of a character, who by the time BG2 came out had his name changed to Jon Irenicus. This is the only time he is referred to in BG1, and Centeol is not mentioned at all in BG2. Also, Jon Irenicus never even had a wife.
