Here is how I believe it works: Take any wilderness AREA from the game. When you go there for the first time, opponents appear as the designers have planned them to. But if you save after every 30 feets you walk (like I often did before I knew about this) the amount of enemies often duplicate, harmless kobolds can change to wolves, and so on and so on. This works even if you have cleared the whole area. All you need to do is save once, go back to explore and you have new enemies again. Just like you said, it does reset when you enter new area.

But I dont believe that saving affects the last battle. Sarevok and his friends won´t get any more hit points. Same thing with practically every town/city screen which features no wildlife. About this I ain´t sure of though.

It's not how often you SAVE your game, it's how often you RELOAD that creates extra monsters--on each Reload, all of the spawn points on the map create a new set of random monsters. And MAN, do they add up if you're not careful! I found this out the hard way in Peldvale: Black Talon Elites--in groups of TWELVE???

Ahh that makes more sense. That group sounds even worse than tow sixpacks of wolves, which the game likes to respawn a lot.

I got the info from Gamespots walkthrough (which I didnt use of course...).

Heres mine. Bridge ruins, and a lady walks up screaming about a man in a jar. She kills herself and brings Kahrk the Ogre-mage into existence. At this time I was a solo ranger level 6 who had just left the bandit camp. i had not lost a fight that whole game (which im still playing) so i felt sure he'd die, he was only a ogre-mage, and i had just killed a greater basislisk with no magic, just a sword without potions. I was wrong. two lightning bolts, 3 acid arrows, and at least 5 magic missiles left me alive with only about 20 hp. I stood there, weak against magic, when he ran at me. I ran away, he was faster. i changed into a wolf and ran. still faster. damn he is fast. went back to human and went one on one. At the end of the fight he had taken 92 damage. he attacked 3 times a round. he won. he also did 12 damage at least every hit. this loss is made more embarrasing by the fact that he killed me repeatedly.( i refuse to use potions.) but when i killed him, he was only 3500 Xp and had no magical items. I was PISSED! he had a laerels tear necklace for 3000GP, but thats another story.
