THACO is an acronym for "To Hit Armor Class 0" This is the number a character, NPC ,or monster needs to attack an armor class zero target successfull. THAC0 depends on a character's class and level. The THAC0 number can be used to calculate the number to hit any armor class.

At the heart of the combat system is the Attack roll, the die roll that determines weather an attack succeeds or fails. The number a player needs in order to make a successful attack roll is also called the "to hit" number, which is determined by the computer by taking a character's THAC0 and adjusting according to the armor class of the target. Attack rolls are used for attacks with swords,Bows, hammers, and other weapons,as well as blows from fists, and other hand-to-hand attacks.

In all Baldur's Gate games the "to Hit" roll is done behind the scenes for you, If your character is successful he/she Hits, if not he/she misses/

FOR MORE on this read page 76 & 77 of the Baldur's Gate 1 Game Manual.
the main thing is THAC0 "To Hit Armor Class (0)ZERO"

IIRC critical hits have been modified to suit the actuality of gameplay. Making a successful critical strike is like finding a needle in a haystack; not exactly that hard, but much more challenging than just rolling one natural 20. Again, IIRC a critical "to hit" in 3rd means you have the possibility of striking a vital area, and the instant kill is something I really don't want to get into..

(By the way, correct me if I'm wrong)

I like the 3rd ed rules better than the 2nd ed rules as they removed those silly weapon restrictions that prevented a cleric from equiping a sword or rogue using a longsword. This give you more freedom to create your own characters.

An interesting side effect from multi-classing in the game with a female sorcerer/fighter is that the on screen avatar figure changes between wearing a dress or tights depending on the which is the higher level.

Take THACO. Subtract target AC. Roll over that number to hit.

I dont like the 3rd ed system, cos Ive never figured out what the maths behind it are like. I gather that AC 10 ~= old AC 10 and AC 20 ~= old AC 0? Which means my paladins AC of 16 is ~= old AC of 4 which is quite pants really. Have to work on that.

I do *really* like the new character progression system though.

lol, that's cool actually, gotta try that, but wouldn't he be maxed at 14/14? since the 2 lvls of lvl adjustment, i don't know, never maxed a char in IWD2 (yet?).
where are you with that pally with 16 armour class? wouldn't he have better than that even in just leather? and in some full plate he would easily go above tthat

ooh and btw, the highest i ever got without any spells cast was 45 kinda nice considering i wore no armour either just this damage reduction thingy. 10/3 i think an item from BG2

Early chapter one. Well, just into chapter two now which means I now have plate mail. Oddly, since plate mail dosent let you have a dex bonus to AC, I didnt get any AC improvement at all from this. At ac 18 now, could have sworn someone was at 16 though. Didnt get the stats distributed right since I *detest* point based character generation and didnt pay much attention at the time.
