I had the same problem trying to play an 'evil' character... I started evil in BG1 and slowly shifted my alignment to chaotic good by the end of Throne of Bhaal.
I think the game is designed for extreme's... lawful good or chaotic evil, it is designed well for both (chaotic evil being summed up as the hapless slaughter of anyone you talk to). I enjoyed playing a Paladin the most though; the game has ample oppertunities for selfless heroism.

As far as parties goes, I have strong preferences towards Jahiera, Minsc, Imoen and Jan, although that combination varies alot. And I prefer to play a tank type character almost exclusively.

I just finished ToB with:

me, a priest of lathander who had the patience to be in love with...
Anomen, and with them there was
Aerie
Nalia
Minsc
and Jaheira

Nalia was complete twoddle as a thief in ToB, she couldnt detect a trap if it had a big neon sign saying "I'm trapped" above it. Aerie was more there f or the ride, she did very little really, and never did get much high level spells, but was useful when Nalia keeled over dead. Anomen was used just as a fighter, as was Minsc and Jaheira, and my priest just waded into the foray as well after summoning devas/elementals/planetars/etc.

One of the most important characters in any party is a thief... I'm still so POed I can barely speak that they killed off the ONLY SINGLE CLASS THIEF IN THE GAME! Boy did that ever make me mad! Anyway, Jan is an excellent thief/mage, but his big weakness is that he needs to use his skill boosters for most of the game. Once you get into high levels, Jan is easily among the most capable members of my party (uses Firetooth and Shield of Order, with a standard Neutral Archmage Robe gives some -5 or so AC, which is great for a mage. Toss in super fighter gauntlets for 5/2 attacks per round (use assassination here obviously) and watch the enemies scream).

Minsc (switch for Sarevok)

Jaheira (would ditch for Viconia at the drop of a hat next time)

my party is based on the charaters i like........not ther skills

Me: Kachiko, Half-Orc Wizard Slayer..Funny thing about her...I named her after reading The Scorpion book based on The Five Rings novels and RPG...then I get the Add-in marts and the guy, the one in the bar, cant remember name, has Kachiko's Dagger...
