No, not at all. If Forgotten Realms are *fantasy* universes - which they are - then even trivial things like having two people named John are significant to the story!

Remember though, that it is Jon Irenicus, and not John! Obviously there is a link to R/L but then again; fantasy characters always have different names... How to pronounce them is often not an issue in games, just type them, and let the gamers solve that problem

>As for Irenicus' wife - or at least his lover: you'll know if you've played SoA, that very same Ellesime. I don't think they were actually married, but that's just a minor inconsistency due to the fact that the story for SoA was obviously not fully written when they put the Spider-Woman in BG1.

In a further twist, Irenicus' Dungeon in Athkatla has a beautifully-decorated room inside, which Imoen recalls is 'for a lost love, kept in perfect condition'. Obviously Ellesime. And yet when entered, an alarm activates two Golems to defend it, one of whom says 'The chambers of the Master's Wife have been violated.' WERE they married, or is this just some strange quirk in Irenicus' head that makes him believe they were?

I'm inclined to say that it's a little twist in his brains. He's pretty f#$ked up because of losing his 'Elfness', and IIRC it is clearly stated in the game, more than once, that he and Ellesime were lovers. Nothing about being married other than those Golems you mentioned.

And Link, to be totally accurate, his official name is Jonaleth (or Joneleth, not sure). He only became Irenicus, 'Shattered One', after his longevity was taken away, subsequently forcing him to live as a Human.

Oh, and Mr-Creed, there's no connection, except for the name, between the Sendai from BG1 and the Sendai from ToB. The first is a Human, and the second is a Drow.

I'm pretty sure that there was some kind of competition to have player's characters in BG2 (I think the guy who chucks his scimitar at you in the docks is one), but not heard of it in BG - likely to be some of the staff/play-testers etc in though.

One question - WTF is Dradeel doing when you finish the Cloakwood mines? There's no other bits of narration like that, and if it's really required, why use an existing character name?

Incidently, if you use the Baldurdash dialog fix the spider woman's speach is changed so that the name of the arch-mage is Irenicus.
