My first time through I think I used summons to distract Jon, ran away and lured the demons after me, killed them, then went after Irenicus. Then you don't have to worry about the others.
Or you could gate in some help of your own to keep the demons busy and focus on Jon from the start. |

Basic general strategy (works on pretty much anything):
Cast Improved Haste on your Warriors (Archer, Minsc, & Jaheira). Hit everything who isn't Protected from Magical Weapons until they fall down dead. Cast Breach on the people who are Protected from Magical Weapons, and then hit them too.

I remember I simply made my party run as quickly as we could with haste to the lowest stairs and wait for the boss to teleport himself, as he indeed did. I quickly cast all spells I had to dispel his magic ( Breach, dispel magic, remove magic, ... ) and swarmed him with melee fighters. His demons were just standing around up above.
I suffered some heavy damage and Valygar died, but eventually the boss fell.
