The thing with dual classing is to work out what you want from the first class. In some ways, the 'dual class' tag is misleading. Generally, you do not play the character as an exponent of both classes, but you use the first class to bolster the abilities of the second. In order to know when to dual, you need to know when you get what you want from the first class.

For example: (and can someone correct me if I get something wrong)

A ranger to cleric. The ranger class means that the cleric can cast druid as well and cleric spells - which is a benefit you get as long as you have one level of ranger, but you might to decide to wait to dual until after your ranger has 3 * in dual wield, and has specialised in 2 weapons.

For a thief to fighter, you might want to wait until level 13, when the thief gets the 5 times backstab multiplier.

If your doing mage to fighter, and the only reason for the mage part is to have a fighter who can use wands, scrolls etc, then you will want to dual as soon as possible (one level of mage will grant all that you want, but you can't start that low in BG2) and before you've missed out on too many hit points.

R/C Multi-Class and F/T Multi-Class are better then their Dual-Class incarnations.

A Cleric->Thief or Thief->Cleric can also backstab with a... *cough* *cough* club. Whether you can bring yourself to use such a weapon for backwhacking though, is another matter of personal taste.

For a Kensai->Mage dualclass in plain SoA, the general recommended level to dual your Kensai is at level 9. Level 7 is feasible( and popular) too, but if you want a beefier K->M, level 9 would be the way to go.

Kensai > Thief Dual Class L13/17. Can achieve grand mastery in a weapon of your choice, have many attacks and backstab. What more could a girl want this Christmas?

Bachelor number 2 is Fluffikins, our L13/14 Kensai/Mage is a powergamers dream, using both his sexy body and his powerful mind to dominate the enemy. Wowser.

Our third contestant tonight is Cripplehunter. This suave and sophisticated rogue will charm you before cutting your heart out and making it his forever. A purecut L23 Assassin. Do you think you can win his poisoned heart?

Out last contestant is Sychopant. A madman who attempts to leech his powers off the Gods themselves (how ironic). With the powers of the Gods behind him, he's praying he's lucky tonight! Cleric L15/Thief 16.

Which will it be? The choice is yours.

Bear in mind that if you want to make a powerful dual class, dualling LATE is the way to go (hence these ridiculously high duals).
