Another good tactic if you want to use...
* * * * * * * * * * * Have your party equipped to range attack apart from one fighter with low AC (equipped wiht boot of speed). Use the fighter as a lure to make the Mindflayer chase him/her around when your range unit can kill the annoying monsters off one by one. Usually work with monster that moves around slowly.

if you free their thralls early on you can use their nacklace things to put round their heads and just control one and have him on yours..you only get a few of these...and it is SOA or TOB where you get the blue vials which when you drink it essentially casts chaotic commands on you..you get the vials in the illithid dungeon on either underdark of TOB, they are handy.

Do you have any Kua-toa bolts/darts of stunning. If so use them. The Mind Flayers are mighty weak to stun.
