We could just kill them I suppose, but I think it's fair for Minsc to try first. I agree that in terms of any major battle Minsc is better served hitting things with the weapon of his choice than talking to the animals.

If I'm fighting an evil thing Minsc is hitting things. If it's neutral or good, then Minsc will try to charm those of Animal nature.

I like to roleplay with the charm animal ability. I try and charm animals with my ranger and send them away rather than kill them. That seems a bit a rangerish thing to do...

I like to charm the guy who tells you about the jewel in the chicken, the one who calls you tin heads. Then I march him at the front of my party till I find a wild animal. That guy is an idiot. Wild animals have their uses and are best kept alive.
