I have to say I find Anomen a lot less annoying than most on this forum seem to
(Although I could kick his head in when he says "All good Leaders must also follow")

It's a choice that you made, and one that seemed right to you at the time. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to behave in BG2. If you really want LG Anomen instead of CN Anomen, either reload from a save or know not what to do next time.

(People say his romance gets better if he's chaotic neutral, though...I think he just gets a dirty mind. :blink

*SPOILERS* in case anyone didn't figure that already...

*Jumping back on original train*

Actually, if I recall correctly, Anomen is supposed to refuse his father's request to kill Saerk... as that's not the Lawful approach. (No evidence other than Dad's say-so that you could take to the constable.)

*Jumping onto hijacked train*

I'm not sure how the rules in P&P AD&D would handle a character already experienced in another class (in this case, both Fighter and Cleric) who wanted to become a Paladin. What was done with Anomen is probably even better than the best you could formally do under the rules, which would be that he gets title and social/status/responsibility priviliges within the organization, but doesn't formally change class. Anomen actually does better than that because he gets his +4 Wisdom bonus for being knighted... which is actually far more useful for him as a Fighter/Cleric than it would be as a Paladin.

Makes you wonder how it works with regular Paladins... are they required to perform noble, honorable deeds as a Level 0 nothing before being granted status as a Level 1 Paladin by either their god, or some knightly organization representing them? Was it ever intended for that to be roleplayed? And if they are actually getting their powers from a certain kind of dedication to a deity, why couldn't that deity do the same thing for someone already progressed along a different path, if they've shown the same level of dedication and honorability/etc?

As far as I know, Minsc should have been a barbarian (HINT: remember his ability ). There was no barbarians in Baldur's Gate 1, so he was decided to be a ranger.

He does have a love for nature...maybe berserker/ranger?

I've done a smidge of research in my D&D 3rd edition books on the knight and paladin and I haven't found much. From what I've read, 0-level paladins are considered squires until hitting level 1.

Paladin:
Squire -> Squire Paladin (Ajantis in BG1 was a Squire Paladin) -> Paladin -> Member of the Order of the Most Radiant Heart. Remember, kids, the OotMRH only accepts Paladins who are at least sixty years old. And Human. And really good-lookin'. (Hey, I just realized--the age requirement for the OotMRH means that, in Chapter 6, you're essentially going to an old folks' home to ask a bunch of geriatrics in armor to help you beat somebody up).

Knight:
Squire -> Warrior Priest -> Knight

The reason Anomen's Test can't occur while the Windspear Hills quest is left unfinished is because of certain....unpleasantries that will occur if you return to Athkatla before rescuing Garren's kid.

A couple of points:

Minsc has a bad head injury, IIRC, so presumably he had higher INT/WIS before receiving it (bring to question why a Heal/Greater Restoration can't do anything...let alone a Wish spell).

With Mazzy, they were accutely aware that she wasn't a paladin. In fact...
*minor dialogue spoiler*

she has a dialogue where she laments not being able to be a paladin, but that she hopes someday the gods might create a third edition/version (don't remember the exact wording) of halfling that could become a paladin (obvious reference to 3ed allowing halfling pallys).

Also, if the Order only lets in people 60+...how is Keldorn a member of the Order?

I think the comment referred to Keldorn, but he's only 50ish. (40ish? The older Firecam daughter seems about my age--20--but the younger one seems to be in the 6-10 year range. Which makes me wonder how often Keldorn comes home!)

Keldorn's in-game profile:
"When asked about his past, Keldorn sighs and is forced to think for a moment before counting the number of years he has been a Paladin of Torm in the service of the Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart. He has battled to protect the defenseless and punish the evil on more occasions than he can recall. A seasoned veteran with the scars to prove it, Keldorn speaks wistfully of retirement in the future and the opportunity to spend more time with his family. Upon their mention, however, Keldorn's attention wanders and grows grim. Duty is more important than personal considerations, he whispers harshly, so long as the Order has need of him."

And Anomen's:
"When asked about his past, Anomen is quick to state that he has been serving the Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart for years, and after his Test he will be a full and true knight. Anomen is reluctant, however, to speak of his noble upbringing, saying only that he entered the Order without the support of his father, Lord Cor Delryn. Since he could not be sponsored as a squire, Anomen chose the route of the warrior and priest of Helm, the god of guardians, and has fought many battles over the years against forces of evil. Anomen often says that he is confident that he will prove worthy of his knighthood, but sometimes seems to be trying to convince himself of the fact more than anyone."

Gee, game, thanks for sharing what I couldn't find out by just playing the game! (But thanks to Sorcerer's Place for the bios!)

I'm wondering if paladins study more in their early days than knights. There's a certain Keldorn/Yoshimo dialogue that springs to mind.
