Uh, mages have plenty of chances when they get to be good. Letting them use armor would make them too powerful.

There's no such thing as a mage that's too powerful. Get a Wizard Slayer to cut through their protections and they're toast

IF you think about it, a mage with armor would be near indistructability, godlike, even, but there are plenty of protection spells that should keep them happy. one spell trigger and BAM instant armor, stoneskin, ect.

The armor dropped by the black dragon is excellent for multi/dual classed mages, but you get it at the end of the game! its totally worthless except for a few battles.. that is, for those of us who dont have ToB

No, Xero was talking about the Dragon in Suldenessellar.

A Mage in Full Plate (even assuming he could still cast spells) wouldn't be more dangerous at all, considering that most dangerous enemies can just punch right through it anyway. Sure, it'll protect you from your run-of-the-mill Goblins and the like, but you'll still take Critical hits which mess up your spells and (given that you're a Wizard) pose a serious threat to your hitpoints. Besides, you can't really Tank unless your Saving Throws, THAC0, and Attacks per Round are on a par with your AC, so just wearing some spiffy armor is *not* going to turn your Sorcerer into a juggernaut, even with Tenser's Transformation.

Fighter/Mages, on the other hand......

Armor, Shield, Ghost Armor, Spirit Armor. All provide Mages with some form of base AC bonus. Ever seen anybody actually cast one of them? Me neither.

No, a mage with the infamous Incarnadine Armor would be considered indestructable With this, you get the best of the Red D and Elven Chain mail armor, probably the best armor for a wizard to get.

Incarnadine Chain Mail Armor

Forged at Gangrell's request by interlocking red dragon scales with a suit of enchanted elven chain mail, the Incarnadine Elven Chain provides a superior combination of protection and freedom of movement. Rogues and wizards can still practice their trades while wearing this light suit of armor.

STATISTICS:

Fire Resistance: 25% bonus
Stealth: 10% Penalty
Lockpicking: 5% Penalty
Find/Remove Traps: 5% Penalty
Pick Pockets: 20% Penalty
Armor Class: 0
Weight: 15
Requires: 5 Strength
Not Usable By:
Druid
Mage

Sure, the Asylferund Chain and Incarnadine Chain are nice, but no way in *hell* are they anything compared to the Robe of Vecna. I think the only time I'll wear the Incarnadine is with my all-Mage party:

PC: (Male Gnomish Fighter/Illusionist): I'll already be immune to Normal weapons, so there's no need for Asylferund--switch between Armor of the Hart and Incarnadine.
Aerie: Enhanced Robe of the Good Archmagi
Jan: Enhanced Robe of the Neutral Archmagi
Kelsey: Robe of Vecna
Edwin: Enhanced Robe of the Evil Archmagi
Nalia: Enhanced Robe of the Good Archmagi
