Note that even a Sorcerer can kick booty at close range: It all depends on which spells you pick. It won't be entirely nonsensical to create a Sorcerer who specialized in touch-range spells, such as Shocking Grasp, Tenser's Transformation, Maze and Black Blade of Disaster, along with the required Combat and Spell Protections with which to back them up.
(ponders the implications of a party of 6 Sorcerers, with this guy being the Tank)

you wana know something? my sorcerer would turn your wild mage into jelly! he has protection from magical energy+globe of invulnurability+robe of mirrors and an unstoppable combo of lower resistance and death touch+symbol stun and sybol death
