Imprisonment kills.
Actually, doesn't a succesful casting of Freedom remove the imprisonment on bring the character back. If it's your PC who's imprisoned then I guess you've had it, but...

Freedom seems to free you from Imprisonment....
I've fought this thing a billion times and I knew what spells it casted and when...so when the thing cast Imprisonment on my main character i got another of my npcs to cast freedom. The imprisonment spell made the screen "hide the interface panels like i was dead, but once the freedom spell was cast i got control back....

That's bizarre. Whenever MY main character gets Imprisoned (or Petrified, etc.), it's instant death, with no chance for any of my party members to cast any spells to save my ass--certainly not any spells with a Casting Time of 9.

What this game needs is a new version of the Imprisonment spell: The version that you cast at enemies remains unchanged, but the version that enemies cast at you is exactly like Maze, but with a duration of 3000 game hours and it ignores Magic Resistance. This won't affect the outcome of any battles (you'll still have to cast Freedom if you want to go anywhere that week), but it'll resolve the Imprisoned PC = Death and the Imprisoned Sweetie = Broken Romance difficulties.

Maybe when he saw the spellcasting animation start, he started off one of his other characters castying freedom. The PC was imprisoned, the GUI disappeared, then before the endgame movie was launched, the freedom was completed and the PC was brought back, along with the GUI?

Seems like this is possible to me, though the timing would be darn tricky
