It's ALSO interesting to note, since you're dragging in historical information that the national debt debt as a % of GDP has increased significantly MORE under DEMOCRACTIC congresses than under Republican ones..

Since 1980, the House of Representatives, which controls the nation's budget pursuant to Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution (subject to Presidential veto), has been controlled for 12 years by Republican Party and will be controlled for 18 years by the Democratic Party until 2010

Democratic Houses run budget deficits on average FIVE TIMES higher than Republican Houses (4.7% versus .9% of GDP).

But under any measure those last two years were a REAL Doozy!

As I said, Republican Presidents. Since Reagan they have all sought tax cuts for the wealthy and spent lavishly on making war. These have been the primary source of our deficit, and what is different than the decades prior to the 80's. Presidents play a heavy hand in directing congress on its budget items. It was Reagan more than any individual Representative that forced the tax overhaul of the 80's, he created the truthy term "trickle down economics," he was the force behind the arms race.
