Makes sense, Qing dynasty Chinese kung fu masters sometimes stuck coins (or blades) in their "queue" (long braid) that they spun around as an extra weapon...

I had seen that done in movies, but as they were not documentaries...I never knew if it was based in reality or not.
There is history for this in the Persian/Arab past as well as the Mongols, though in both cases they were weapons of last resort and not typically used in combat. |

I think it was more of a duel thing (or hidden weapon thing, i.e. "anqi") - not much use in the chaos of war.
One famous martial arts expert is said to have died as a result of using the hidden queue weapon - baguazhang master Cheng Tinghua is said to have killed several Germans during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 with blades; when he decided to flee with his "lightness skill" by leaping over a wall, his queue with the coin unfortunately got stuck in between two boards in a wall or roof, thus stopping him long enough to get him fatally shot. ![]() Nowadays, the queue has fallen out of fashion, so I don't think anyone has kept this particular skill (the queue was a Qing dynasty thing that was forced on the Chinese by the ruling Manchurians; for a while, it was also fashionable, but nationalists rejected the custom as well, making it hard for people to choose what to do. Thus, people with queues hid them under those funny Chinese hats when in company of those who didn't like them, and people without queues wore hats WITH queues attached to them when in company of those who liked them.)

That reminds me of the hats available in the late '80's that had a ponytail attached.
