True NS, but program updates are not always free. For instance if you want the latest version of logitech's mouseware applet you need to pony up the $$. And the updating of the DAT files does cost the company money after all.

We're talking about me lying to the program to make it *think* I have the updates - which is perfectly fine.

Yes, downloads are not always free. But, Symantec and Network Associates (both of which offer "pay for auto updates" service) don't charge for the dat files. It's the automated service you pay for. The other features of the Live Update service are not free (pathces and program updates) just the virus deffinitions.

Did you use the System Works interface to do the update or download the files directly? The interface will check your subscription, getting the files manually is still a back door.

I've got about 5 months or so left, and I found the file in question, but your email address is unlisted here at IW. I used IW to send you an email saying I have the file, but I can't send the file that way.

Email me.

EDIT - I'm running Norton System Works 2002.

Just PM-ed you Ronn, and yes, IIRC mine is SystemWorks 2002 as well, though I think NAV came installed on my VAIO laptop - but I don't think it'll matter.

THanks so VERY VERY MUCH.

Just a little heads up on a program I use, it's the PC-Cillin product. It came with just about every motherboard I've bought in the past 5 years (on the utilities CD) and It works great!

It has a feature similar to liveupdate on NAV, it checks for updates as often or as seldom as you like - and has no annoying popups. Updates are completely free, and continue for the lifecycle of the program which appears to be 5 years. (I was using PC-Cillin 98 up until december of last year, when I switched to the copy of PC-Cillin 2000 I got with an older Asus mobo) Both program code and virus definitions are updated with the service.

It has a webfilter (for those XXX sites you don't want the kids to see), a POP3 scanner, and Javascript scanner as well as a hd virus shield.

Pretty good for a bundled program.

TL, I'm going off-line for a little while, so if you email me, I'll get it to you when I'm back on.

Yes, but (I vaguely remember) PC CIllin had a bug in it that kept giving me an annoying pop-up as well - based on a perceived error rather than a subscription service. I think my first WinXP fix-patch got it working right. It's been 15 mos. so I forget how I did it but somehow I got rid of its bug.

You can disable those irritating pop-ups. Open up Norton Antivirus, click options. Then in the new window, click Miscellaneous under Other. Uncheck the box Alert me on start-up, if my virus protection is out of date. That should do the trick.
