But not "the f-word", as a matter of fact. It is in origin a Germanic word (and does not stand for Fornicating Under Consent of the King, that's just an urban legend).
The first occurence of the word in Scots (and from there, to English) was in the beginning of the 16th century, in a poem by William Dunbar.

Webster: akin to Dutch fokken to breed (cattle), Swedish dialect fokka to copulate

Yeah, our language is mostly Germanic. We do have some French influence, but not a lot. It's a bit of a hotch-potch really, what is now England has been invaded so many times over the millennia, and of course the language has incorporated words from many languages. Many English place names are absolutely fascinating in their origins, coming from Celtic, Roman, Viking, Saxon and Norman influences depending on when the settlement was founded. 'London' is from the Roman Londinium, whereas York is from Viking 'Jorvik' (it was Eboracum in the Roman period). I grew up in Guildford, the name of which is Saxon in origin.

On your point about bad language - well I'm afraid I swear like a sailor - and being in my 30s I can't claim the innocence/exuberence of youth.

Well, my 8 year-old neice swears up a storm when she plays video games and I just want to smack her. But her mother (my wife's sister) has absolutely no control over her whatsoever.
Personally, I rarely swear and I can't swear at all in front of my parents, even though I am 31... The ONE time I did, I was about 20. I was in my back yard and a bird pooped on me. I yelled, my then-girlfriend asked what was wrong and I said quite loudly "a bird shat on me!" At least, even in my anger, I still managed to conjugate my curse correctly.

If some little kid that I know swears around me, I would hit him, either my brother or cousins etc. They shouldn`t be allowed by their parents to swear while they are under 10 at least. Neither should they be allowed to watch movies, play games etc. in which there is alot of swearing.
