I *hate* compaq, as I may have mentioned.
Anyway, you can get into BIOS with F10 on most compaq machines. You need the ID string, not the BIOS type. That BIOS chip will be in hundreds of motherboards, we need to know what software its loaded with. Compaq part numbers dont help either.

Please excuse my ignorance; what exactly am I looking for in the BIOS setup? I have been able to access it however I have no idea what I am looking for. There are a number of pages. Do I need the number where it says Primary slave? Secondary slave? Primary master? After primary master it reads: [Maxtor 94091u8 – (pm)]. If this is not what is needed please indicate.
Ps. If any of you kind souls are getting feed up with me, I understand, and apologize once again.

primary master is your primary harddrive where all your data is stored (windows, programs etc) so no you dont want to touch that at all maxtor is a make of hdd btw.
although 133 is backwardly compatible (clocks it down to 100) you CANNOT mix 100 and 133 in the same machine, it wont work (worked for me twice and i cant explain how, its meant to be impossible but take it as it wont work if you try it) , you may need to flash the bios, but to flash the bios you must be certain what your motherboard is and what it supports, compaq site should have the info if you look up all serial numbers on it. and garnet you only get pairs in the old memory like edo or in P4 even then you only need a splitter not an actual doubled up selection of memory (ie 128mb in one slot and splitter in its adjacent slot) sdram doesnt work like that, a single stick or any combination is fine, just as long as the speeds are the same. have u tried the 256mb 133 on its own without the 100? if so and it doesnt support it either its too old or you just need to flash the bios, could try emailing compaq support and give them your motherboard details and check what the latest flash bios is then get instructions how to do it, normally takes about 5 mins when you have a disk with it on and its straightforward enough. |

Well, it's not parity you only need 1 chip for it to work. As that is what you HAD. Regular Phoenix BIOS upgrades will not help you, this is a special COMPAQ (Read piece of crap) BIOS. Go to the Compaq site and try and find the support/download pages for your model make and year. They should have for download the latest BIOS. The 2.10 in your BIOS line you posted is the version. I bet it's close to the latest for that board and model. PC133 is NOT automatically backwards compatible, especially in COMPAQs. In some cases it is, some not, and some depends on the board. If the board only runs at 100, it still has to handle 133 and slow it. Well made boards will, Compaq's will usually not. I hate Compaq's myself, and I recently worked at a IT cosultaning company and we upgraded 250 of em to Win2K and 256MB from Win95 and 64 or 128. We had plenty of these nightmares.
In closing, yes, make sure you try it ALONE, without the 100. In the BIOS there should be a page that tells how much memory is in the system. You can't change it, but it should tell you what it sees, so you can tell if it sees the right amount. Does it beep at all? If yes, there is a code in the number of short vs long beeps, if no...trying the chip in another PC is a good idea, I've had bad memory before, on the order on 1 in 150-200.

From the download site for the BIOS upgrade you need:
Changed memory drive strength for improved reliability. The fact that it wasnt set for maximum reliability already implies either idiocy or malignancy. Being compaq, either are reasonable suppositions. Theres some other memory stuff mentioned as well, so this could well fix your problems. Heres the link: http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_det...twareVer=12195 Oh, and in case the site neglects to mention it :- BIOS flashes are *dangerous* and you should make sure the power isnt interrupted during it. Cos if it is, the BIOS will become corrupt, and then your RAM will be the least of your problems.

I have updated my BIOS as per the web site listed above. I then tried, again, to install the rotten 256MB chip, by itself, and was unsuccessful. I thank you all for you help and support. I do believe I will take the chip back to Best Buy and get a DVD or two.

ah yeah sorry forgot to mention that, its compaq, they have their own memory on a lot of machines and sometimes their motherboards/bios wont accept any other manufacturer the ^$Ł^%$Ł^s and in most boards that take both 100/133 then if the board is clocked at 100 it will bring the 133 down and always work in my experience, but if the board isnt designed to take 133 at all then no it only works sometimes, sorry i didnt make that clear.

I just re-installed windows after having to delete my harddisk - now on to the rest of my software
I don't know if it was the 128 extra RAM I just installed or the EverQuest I was in the middle of installing - but the result was a total breakdown And I lost all my saved games P.S. Luckily I still had my password to IW
