You need to count the socks. If you have both halves of each pair of socks coming out, you have major problems. Throw your machine out the window and employ a maid.
If you have only one sock of each pair exiting, or put lots of socks in and none come out, your machine is functioning normally. Do not attempt to alter it; you'll only make it mad...

Sounds like the timer is shot.How old is the machine?If its over 5 yrs old its probably the timer its usually in the the top of the machine right behind the knobs.Bring it in and they can check it out.

It could be the thermostat.
Washing machines take in water, then heat it to the temperature of the wash programme before starting the drum. If the water is either a) not being heated, or b) the temperature of the water is not being measured, then the wash cycle won't start. If it has a cycle which just washes without heating (cold wash) try it on that cycle and see if the motor starts when you are not asking the machine to heat or measure the water temperature.

Very interesting fact there...Epona! I have checked and found that it was "colors" my wife was trying to run, and the temp was set to cold.
