Try disk first aid which is part of your utilities, see if that helps.

Also go into your system folder and look for the preference folder.

Inside that preference folder there is all kinds of crap, scroll down and dump the ones you know you don't need in the bin. Don't worry if you dump some others you are not sure of, because as soon as you open the programme new preferences are automatically made.

You may be able to go on to the apple site and see if you can download anything useful, and I am not sure if you can get a 30 day trial of Nortons Utilities, but you never know.

Sometimes if the system has been installed for a long time, things do get corrupt, i.e. chooser, and occasionally finder.

If you have a copy of your system try reinstalling it.

It should only replace the basics, anything extra you have added won't be touched. It explains everything when you install, or in the booklet.

Sir G. Don't worry about your preferences. When you re-start an application after you delete your preferences, it will just make a new one.
Getting rid of your present one will delete the settings that are corrupted, but re-starting the app will build a new file using the present settings.
Also, Zidane's suggestion about re-building the desktop should solve the problem. Those two steps (prefs & desktop) usually handle 90% of a Mac's problems.
