To paraphrase the first video ever played on MTV Stupidity killed the video star.... Name the Band/Song/Year ....
Song is "Video killed the radio star" in 1983????? by I forget the name of the band! Big budgets and declining cd sales probably killed the video star, but bands can make still make videos purty cheap, just no where to play em!!!

1982 - The Buggles - right song.
There's a whole lot of things wrong in the music industry - but that's a whole other can of worms!

And I must say that MTV has provided some fine, funny, and original programming, I like The two you mentioned as well as Beavis & Buthead and Daria and others. They had a new cartoon last year. It is strange... The clones of dead heroes of history go to high school... Ghandi, Cleopatra, JFK...Anybody know the name of that one? [ 06-12-2003, 04:28 AM: Message edited by: Chewbacca ]

For me it's not just television. Even the good ol-fashioned radio is becoming less and less of a resource for listening to and hearing about music outside the top of the pops, though maybe it is only a problem where I live. They used to have special features for different genres, but now it is all pep-talking and bad jokes.
My sources of new music are limeted to this: Hearsay, mainly on internet forums. Buying records blindly. This is way too expensive. Especially because CD's seem to increase in price with about one dollar each year. Going to concerts with band you know nothing about. This can be great fun. Festivals.

didn't you know, those of us who made it through the 80's are a dying generation everyone has the internet now, so no one watches tv much anymore and it is really sad when even the country video televisons stop playing videos cmt sold out and now is more of a talk show, tnn is now Turner television network why did we have to see what would become of the world? can't we just go back in time and stay in the 80's?

There's a poem with the line "nothing Gold can stay" that's quoted in "The Outsiders" that seems appropriate.
Still, with MTV2, MTVthis, MTVthat (and probably MTVporno given what they were broadcasting after 10pm) how come no one there is smart enought to develop MTV-O or Original MTV? Bring back Martha Quinn (God, I loved her hair!)and some of the old VJs and do the videos as 55 & 5 per hour (no more than 5 minutes per hour of talk or comercials, period).

MTV has in fact had some decent programming. Daria was good. I guess Beavis & Buttbrain were okay. Liquid TV was frikkin cool. The Maxx. Didn't they discover Daisy Fuentes?
But, these few good show, none of which are around anymore IIRC, cannot ever overcome the evil act of making Pauley Shore a star. Plus, while these shows are awesome, they pale in comparrison to YO! MTV Raps and 120 minutes. |
