defragging with my 40GB harddrive never took longer then 2 hrs. You can easily just start it before you go to sleep and wake up to check the results

yeah, i have a windows partition and a files partition. The windows partition has all windows files and stuff. The files partition holds most of my files, old and new. Another HD and cds have backups [img]tongue.gif[/img]

The only bad thing about defragging alot is the extra use of the hard disk read/write heads and arm-moving motors. It'll probably decrease the life of your hard-disk. Most things in life are done best by following the golden middle route. I.e. defrag regularly but not that often. This is why it is a good idea to have seperate partitions: try and put data that changes alot on a seperate partition so that you can defrag only that partition.

I think it's time to defrag, or maybe you have to many files on your computer and you need to do a bit of a clean up.

Scan disk should be done about once a month, defragmenting for people without partitions should be done about once every two months...
Defragging never took more than four hours for me...but scandisk...yuck! I only ever did a "thorough" scan once, and it took three days...
