AFAIK you can't format any hard disk via windows itself. You have to do it via dos, you can get there with a boot disk, but make sure you know what you've got to do and have all the stuff backed up. And make sure you have the windows cd and that it works

When the computer reboots does a funny clicking noise come from anywhere inside the PC? That could be the HD giving up the ghost...

Get a better OS. Windows ME is known to be stupid and buggy... depending on your exact setup, it could be causing this. Also make sure you're not bumping the reset button with your knee.

32 KB of bad sectors doesn't sound like a lot, but of course it may be JUST enough to screw up WinME (the bane of computer users).

I would go with the overheating route first. Make sure all vents and fans are free of dust and debris, and then clean off your internal parts (use compressed air).

If that doens't work, then I'd reformat. If you can spare the $, dump ME and get a different OS.

I asked this because several IBM NetVista models have had problems with spontaneous rebooting or not powering on at all. It is a mother board problem where the capacitors show signs of bulging or leaking.

I guess it might happen with any other PC if the system board went bad.

Actually, when I tried to find the problem by examining my PC with this and that, I came to a conclution that my main board was the cause of the problem. I think its phisically damage. I don't know if goin' to get a new computer or just replace the mainboard with a new one. Anyway guys, thx for your responses, I appreciate it .

You might want to check your RAM, too. Every times I've had problem of that kind, it was the RAM.

I agree, there is a problem with the motherboard.

I recently fixed a PC that had the exact same symptoms.....

I took the side cover off and stared at the CPU fan for about15 minutes. Low and behold!!! the CPU Fan had stopped spinning. Turned out to be a bad connector on the motherboard. Actually 2 bad connectors. Both went Kaput.

Might want to sit there and stare till it decides to restart and see if you have the same problem.

Overheating mate, Bad CPU 3 pin sockets.

No. I have already tested all the hardwares: RAM, Video Card, Modem, Sound Card, Hard Disk, Floppy Disk, Power Supply, CD ROM. No problem with them. The bad sectors in one of my HD is NOT the cause of the restarting symptoms of my computer .

what my techie said in the past was...

"If your HD has bad sectors, consider it screwed."

an HD with bad sectors is not good news.. as he explained it, every cycle the HD makes adds more and more to the bad sectors until you can't use the thing anymore... (please check by running scandisk again). It happened to my HD

I don't know about how Win XP can lock down bad sectors... but anyway I would simply recommend, if it's an old HD, change it, and have a new OS in hand... well Win ME is perfectly fine with me... but there are better OS around...
