As far as I remember if you multi class you have the restrictions of both classes e.g. a multi fighter/mage can't use swords. If you dual from fighter to mage then one you get your fighter abilities back you can use them so a dualed fighter/mage can use swords. For example Nalia can use swords and bows cause she is a dual thief/mage.
