You do realize that some people are 'cat' people and some are 'dog' people? We have both, but I relate better to cats--when I want to be sociable, I can't get enough 'petting'. When I'm content to be alone, *get out of my airspace!*. Dogs are ok, but so ridiculously clueless. I mean, they're loyal to a fault, loving, sensitive to your every mood--except when you want to be left alone!
::shrugs:: Oh well. :reaches down to pet the puppy: Maybe you should just get a pet rock!

I have both. Far more cats than dogs and they all have their own special ways of grating on my last nerve!
I can't decide between one or the other as which one is "best" but house-training a cat is far easier than house-training a dog, however getting a cat to alert you to intruders or trespassers is impossible, unless you are aware that when they dart under the bed to hide, something is wrong. |

Cat, cat, Cat !!!
Main difference between dogs and cats Dogs are pack animals, they are continually in competition with other dogs and with the humans they live with. They are motivated by their status within their "pack" Cats are solitary hunters. They are motivated by security first, and a ready food supply second. That is why cats jump on peoples laps - not because they like a person - but because they trust that person and feel safe with them. Note: Any bias you may detect in my choice of a desirable pet is probably correct !! [ 11-08-2001: Message edited by: Pangur Ban ]

Ya know I really like both, but if I had to choose, I'd pick DOG. They just seem to be more intelligent. Perhaps it's because their brains are 4 times larger than a cat's. I'm not really sure. But I can tell you that dog's really love human beings. They aren't known as man's best friend for nothing. When you show a dog love and affection, the dog understands, and in most cases will return that attention. Dogs can learn things like tricks, but more importantly... they seem to better pick up on the emotions and desires of their owners. They can communicate in a fashion with us. Cats, on the other hand, are cuter... but they tend to regard human beings as just another part of their environment. We aren't anything special to them. Your dog will be happy to see you come home. Your cat prolly won't pay attention unless he's hungry.
So sayeth the God of WAR!

quote: That is so not true! I have a cat that when I was sad about my dad dying, he came up and layed down next to me, put his paw on my shoulder and meowed. He layed there with me for a long time. Of course, when his sister got hungry, she came up and poked me in the eye, but that's another story. |

We have a dog so...I will have to say dogs are the best. She is incredibly smart and well behaved. If you say "take a shower" she will walk right in and wait for me. She can do a couple other things on command. Cats are very smart also thow... hhmmmm. tough choice??? Can I vote a tie instead
