No, you make sense. When you puch things you can use your body weight as extra help, whereas when you pull something its not as easy. You can still use it, but not as effectively.

could it be that when you are pushing your head through, skin etc will bunch up backwards towards your neck, but when pulling out it has nowhere to go, so you are stuck?

You do make sense, but I think it's less related to your strength. Otherwise, simply getting a couple of folks to help pull you out would take care of the problem. You'd pull, and they'd turn around and push.

When you're pushing, it's basically your whole body exerting a force to try to move "it" forward. When you're pulling, you have two forces -- one trying to exert a force, and another trying to hold on to "it". That makes the weak link in the chain your ability to hang on...

I'm still in the laws of physics and narrow head category. What does "Ask Jeeves" have to say? Is that even still around?

How to get your head out of two bars.

You pull your head back
If that doesn't work, get a good friend to try punching your head through from the frount
If that doesn't work, try both at onec.
Drive a car into your head.
have a hippo run at you.
Get those teachers in.
Scream.
If you are still alive at this point, call firebragade like you should have done earlier!

Seriosly, I have no idea. it's a rule, like gravity, or socks disappearing in the washing machine. it just... happens.

I've never got my head stuck.

I think it's more related to ear structure than physics. You stick your head through the bars... since you're probably doing this face first, your ears squish down to sneak through. Now when you try to get your head back out, your ears (which at the back stick out) don't squish down, they stick out and catch.

To get out of this conundrum, wrap a shirt around your head to keep your ears in and it'll pop out no problem.
