From what I understand, there is no cure for any viral disease...just treatments for the symptoms and asists for the immune system. We do not "cure" the flu, we treat the symptoms and give the bodys immune system a chance to beat it...bt we don't cure it.....You doc types feel free to correct me here

I think you're right. However, by administering the right medications, we boost the immune system of an infected individual to fight the disease (essentially curing it in the individual). With SARS and West Niles, they don't know which drugs would help...

But like you, I'm no expert!

Quite right MagiK, quite right. So far no viral disease have a cure (if you don't count the human immune system of course). The most successful "cure" for a virus would be shingles, herpes zoster (the same virus that causes chicken pox). IIRC we can "cure" people from this dormant virus. I bet Attalus has more information about this.

I'm not sure but I don't think any person in canada has contracted west nile, but it is coming closer and closer to where I live.
but I figure I'm doomed anyway, I live in alberta and I'm either going to get west nile from mosquitos, sars from working at the hospital or mad cow disease cause I eat beef religiously.

but yes, the press is sensationalizing pretty much everything. the percent of patients with sars who die is something like 5% or lower, and as for mad cow disease (my home town is just 2 hours from where this kurfuffle started) there is little to no chance of a north american contracting it because here we don't ground up brain or nerve tissue into our meat products, whereas in the uk they do. so go ahead, eat more alberta beef, it's the best in the world and if you feel sorry for the cows then you obviously never worked on a farm and learned first hand what stupid irritating animals they are. I figure I have canines for a reason

To some extent all this press hysteria is actually a healthy sign.

It shows that we are aware enough to contain epidemics while they're still small.

The West Nile virus can be flu like symptoms although in some of the worst cases it has caused chronic fatigue and even paralysis were people are recover from it long after it is gone from their bodies.

Personally I find the idea of a misquote bite putting people in wheelchairs to be frightening.

One way to combat the transmitter is to ensure you have no little stagnant pools of water lying around your back yards, you can also set up bat houses around your yard a Bat will eat about 3000 misquotes/night.
Did you know you can never catch the same flu twice? It is always a different virus that affects you. There are thousands of strains of flu. Once you have had the West Nile Virus you can not catch it again, same with chicken pox. With certain exceptions (catching it very young (still developing), very old (weaked system), or for some reason your immune system is being destroyed, and mutated viruses which are no longer the same type). When we take a vaccine we are actually taking a small amount of the virus into our bodies to fight and build up our immunity towards it. That is why we often get some minor flu symptoms when taking a vaccine or shot.

Dormant viruses. A lot of people don't give this much thought. There are a lot of viruses that stay dormant in the body. Herpes type viruses are notorious for this! They hide in nerve ganglia. Apparently, the immune system has a harder time reaching certain areas of the anatomy. Through the millenia, viruses have adapted to this and learned to "hide" in these areas. The immune system of a healthy person usually quickly beats down any attempts of the virus to "break out" again. It's a stand off for the life of the host. That's why, when people are infected with immunodeficiency diseases, like AIDS, they are plagued by a plethora of secondary diseases that their body used to have in check.

I thought West Nile came from Africa and originated from Mosquitoes

Or you get live attenuated virus. Or you whole virus particles that are "dead". Immunizing with live virus give the best results.

For those really interested to learn more about Immunology (or Cellular biology or Cancer etc. etc.) I strongly recommend this site: NCBI bookshelf. Free online biology/biomedicine/medicine books. There are several very interesting books there and I believe all of them are available to everyone.
