Adaware will remove xupiter IIRC. Especialy now that it has an update function, previously xupiter was altered to often.

It wont get everything though, so run spybotSD as well. It tends to get the porn dialler type programs and the other more malicious crap out there, some of which adaware dosent. Both are essential.

I went to some page with song lyrics and was asked if I wanted to install Gator. I accidentally pressed enter, but I cancelled it and found that trickler.exe had been installed and my firewall kept asking for permission to let trickler get access to the Internet. I kept saying no and even tried to set it so it would always block and that did not help. I removed it from startup. I searched for it on my computer (in Windows/Temp etc). Tried to delete it and could not. Hit Control Alt Delete and of course it was running. Ended it and deleted the program and it has not recurred since. What a pain in the you know where.

Looks like we have no real control of our PCs at any given time. Isn't the Internet wonderful? It let's us invite all kinds of disreputable cretins into our homes.

Don't get me started on Spam, though.

You need to disable ActiveX, or at least make it impossible for unsigned/unsafe controls to load.

Under IE, go to internet options | security and hit the "custom levels" button.

set them all to "prompt", except controls marked "unsafe" should be disabled. (you can set "safe" controls to "enable"

This completely stops most forms of spyware like xupiter.

Oh boy, that sounds horrible! Hope you got it all off and get Ad-aware loaded up! I've found some odd stuff on my pc after running Ad-aware and my fiance says it's a good idea to run it on a regular basis. You never know what garbage is being placed on your pc without your knowledge or permission. Harkoliar had problems like that with a porn site a little while ago, if I'm not mistaken.

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me two days ago . I went to a site looking for a download, and I didn't even download anything! Didn't even click on anything! And when I opened IE again it had changed my homepage, added a toolbar, rearranged all my favourites and added a bunch of porn and gambling ones, put shortcuts to all the porn and gambling sites on the desktop, and basically screwed around so that I couldn't connect to the internet anymore (kind of self-defeating though I thought, how would I go to all the sites they added for my convenience? ). It took 3 tries before it was all deleted so that it wouldn't come back straight away.

Installing Ad-Aware personal right now... twenty-eight things so far have been recognized by it. *sigh* Time to see who's been sneaking around my PC....

And thanks for the thoughts, Ocelot. I'm over being angry, and am now down to irritated. The sad thing is that weasels like this make it harder for any legitimate developers to do new things.

*thinking about the joys of protecting every computer in the house* Ya know, I may need to hire a system administrator... or train one, for that matter. My time can be better spent on other things.

And Gangrell, it was not, to my knowledge, hacking or something from a download. I don't share that area of my machine, and I live behind a hardware firewall. It clearly started moments after something installed a clock-syncing program for me without me asking for it, and that was at a web page. The Internet Security Zone has increased protection to extremely high, just one notch below annoyingly high.

The count of recognized Shtuff is up to thirty things, and it's about midway through Program Files. Well, more work for me tonight...

Arggghhh!!! Up to 197 things, apparently while looking through the cookies folder. Okay, so I'm *not* going to sleep quite so early after all...

Well, after AdAware did its check, those 197 things... were all leftovers from spyware... including the !@#$% I thought I got rid of yesterday! All 197 of 'em are now history, and I do believe that my machine is running a bit faster. May be psychosomatic, but it sure does feel good...

The positive thing out of all this is that I will get my software firewall back up and running to protect against outgoing things, and I'll have a cleaner and happier system as a result. Oh, and I saw in today's paper that there are some nice price specials on Linksys hardware, so I'm going to get the second four-port wired router I need along with a four-port wireless hub that I'm going to need. The wireless hub comes in a package with a NIC, so life should be good... as soon as I get a laptop to plug into it, that is

Thanks all for letting me vent over the last 24 hours. The end is in sight...
