You could have something going bad. I had a problem with one of my machines that would randomly reboot. Turned out the CPU fan needed to be replaced, and since then, everything's been wonderful.

Sounds kind of like the faulty RAM I had in HossCat for a while, though that was a little easier to diagnose...I'd say the "improperly initialized peripheral" idea is the closest, since, before you see the Windows Load Screen, your computer is scanning all the hardware to see if it all works. If the important things work, it passes the information along to Windows, as it loads, and I imagine Windows checks all the hardware itself, just before the load screen comes up.

It's definitely a hardware issue, and I put the cause as more likely to be a physical one than a driver.

Try to check and see what's not working in the device manager.

I would try swapping the power supply out - that's exactly what my computer started doing right before the power supply blew up.

If you think it's your memory, as suggested earlier, then try this link for a good tester.

yep memtest86, if you have a linux disk it will come standard with it

Although I dont think its memory, since memory problems dont make a pc shut off itself. Besides if its a memory problem it would turn up more regularly.

What about the ground on your wallsocket (sorry if I got that word wrong)? It seems a possibility because of the occurance it might be a power spike thats causing the problem.

If you could trace back to when the problems began and see if you made any hardware and/or software changes that would help.

I wouldve adviced the use of everest (from lavalys.com) but since they abandoned the free version you can only get a trial edition that leaves out fields of information that can be very essential.

Could you post what type of motherboard you have and what graphics card you are using?

Why not suggest he throw it out the window, too?

I've heard everything from re-format to buying all kinds of new hardware, but I have yet to hear many suggestions centered around actual troubleshooting????

It might help to start with some actual specifications of your computer.

Did you actually read all these posts?
There are numerous posts with suggestions which arent even close to buying new hardware or re-formatting.....
Also there have been inquiries about what hardware's been using and windows error logs.

Having said that, Im not sure what you actually expect from members helping other members out of goodwill on a non-professional level.

You might want to tell Luvian also what sort of specifications he should be posting?!
Windows XP should never have to be re-formated unless you do a massive hardware change, ie: motherboard.

Unless you know exactly what hardware is in a PC, I fail to see how you can intelligently diagnose a problem.

I think that members helping members is admirable, but make sure the advice is sound.

Ive looked over the whole thread again, your the first to actually mention (re-)formatting

Did you already suggest which specifications Luvian should post?

Look at your posts and look at the other people's posts, which do you think, will help Luvian solve his problem (first)?

Im no longer going to bother countering this almost trolling manner of posting, since this is going completely off-topic.
Ill be awaiting Luvians answer on the information I requested a few posts back (which motherboard and graphics card he is using).
I'm curious to know which bottle of glue you prefer?

Check the second post. Larry suggested a re-install. Re-install, re-format it's the same thing.

I'm guessing that Luvian should post such specs as the Processor, motherboard, RAM (amount & manufacturer), videocard, soundcard, HD, optical drives on the system.

I'm not about to offer Luvian any advice on solving his problem since I'm not qualified to offer such advice. It's good to know that there are lots of members here qualified to offer such advice.

If you want to start a pissing match, then do so by PM.
